Braai bread

A first bake in the Broodjie bread pan

By Petrus de Bruyn · 9 July 2026
A first bake in the Broodjie bread pan

No campfire needed: Petrus baked a perfect golden loaf from shop-bought dough in the Broodjie bread pan, on an ordinary built-in braai.

Petrus is back - after the roast chicken in the Flattie, this time it's a first bake in the Broodjie bread pan. Proof you don't need a campsite: an ordinary built-in braai does the job.

I have a built-in braai like most townsfolk. I sourced some shop-prepared bread dough - white bread dough. I knew this would require some monitoring to get the hang of the pan and the heat required.

I put some coals on top of the lid later on to brown the bread at the top.

It came out perfectly!

Petrus's top tip

Monitor, and take the bread out of the pan as soon as it's done - the retained heat keeps cooking it if you leave it in.

Bake it yourself

Petrus used the Bread Pan (Broodjie). The Hand-Cast aluminium spreads the heat gently and evenly, so the loaf bakes through without burning underneath - and a few coals on the lid give you that golden top. Shop dough works; your own potbrood dough works even better.
