On the last day of a camping trip, Petrus from Namibia turned a No. 8 Flattie and a Dutch Plate into a coal-fired oven - whole roast chicken, crispy skin, no liquid added.
A story sent in by Petrus, all the way from Namibia - proof that a Flattie and a Dutch Plate turn any campfire into an oven.
Last day off camping and everyone was ready for a break from eating meat! We placed the Dutch Plate at the bottom of the Flattie No. 8, then placed the whole chicken with potatoes and carrots next to it.
We placed the closed pot on the pot stand over coals, and also put some coals on the lid. After about 90 minutes we had a perfectly crispy chicken and roast potatoes and carrots.
No liquid was added to the pot throughout.
Next up is a pork belly!
Petrus's top tip
Take it slow with the heat, and oil the Dutch Plate before you start.
Cook it yourself
Petrus used the Flat Bottom Pot (Flattie), size No. 8 with the Dutch Plate as a roasting rack. The plate lifts your food off the base so hot air does the work - crispy skin on top, no burning underneath, no oven in sight.
