Pieter raised the Dutch Plate on its bolts inside his Flat Bottom Pot, loaded the lid with coals, and baked camp pizza over the fire.
Some of the best ideas around a fire start with a simple question: what else can this pot do? For Pieter, out at camp with his Flat Bottom Pot and a Dutch Plate, the answer was pizza.
No pizza oven, no electricity, just coals, a pot, and a bit of clever thinking. In his own words:
“Starting with the flat-bottomed pot, I raised the height of the Dutch Plate with the bolts so that it sat just below the rim of the pot. With the lid on and loaded with coals, I pre-baked the flat rolled pizza dough for a short bit before adding the toppings, then on went the lid with coals again.”
The raised Dutch Plate turns the pot into a proper little oven: the plate bakes the base from below while the coal-topped lid crisps everything from above.
His verdict? “Camp pizza never tasted this good!”
Pieter’s top tip: it needs heat from the top and the bottom, coals under the pot and on the lid. That’s what gets you a baked base and melted, browned toppings at the same time.
Thank you, Pieter, for sharing this one with us. It’s exactly what the Dutch Plate was made for, one solid piece of cast aluminium that turns a pot over coals into whatever you need it to be that evening.
